Artist Statement

When I look at a spectacular landscape, I see a moment caught in time. A layer of rock and fauna resting between climatic and geological events. Their surfaces scarred by glaciers, the ridge lines formed by tectonic uplifts and the desert basins molded into ribbons of compressed sand from the weight and currents of an evaporated ancient sea. A complex history of the environment adjusting and adapting to change and stress since the Earth's inception.

In my artwork, I explore geology as the essence of creation and keeper of combined histories.

I integrate a number of techniques including abstract painting, printmaking, photography and digital manipulation to create textural layering, which combined, comprise the fully realized miniature landscape collage sketches. These micro-habitats are scaled up into large acrylic paintings. Both my collage works and paintings reflect the geological forces of landscape formation and reenact them with resists that mimic wind, water and temperature erosion.

In my current work,  I'm exploring color-rich gradients of atmospheric skies, saturated and desaturated color palettes, simulated geological rock textures and use actual crushed minerals sourced from an Arizona mining company. All artists’ materials at one point came from the Earth, and many of our colored pigments still do. It is this relationship between materials and the creative process that is the connection to the landscapes I interpret. I often use materials like marble dust, gold mica flake, lava granules and pink granite in my paintings to deepen that connection.

In each work, I employ a spatial technique in painting called "equivocal space" which alters depth perception through color, composition and media to keep your eye engaged and journeying around the image. It is a way I've found that conveys how we move through actual landscapes.

Geology fascinates me to no end - she holds our collective stories in her rocks, her curves, her lines, her strength of perseverance.
