Artist Statement

When I look at a spectacular landscape, I see a moment caught in time. A layer of rock and fauna resting between climatic and geological events. Their surfaces scarred by glaciers, the ridge lines formed by tectonic uplifts and the desert basins molded into ribbons of compressed sand from the weight and currents of a now evaporated ocean. I see a complex history of the environment adjusting and adapting to change and stress since the Earth's inception.

In my artwork, I explore geology as the essence of creation and keeper of combined histories. My paintings emerge in geological time - in the sense that they are constructed in many sedimentary stages, with multiple media techniques applied in a sequence of experimental applications. The outcome is never certain. I integrate abstract painting, printmaking, photography and digital manipulation techniques to create my textural imagery which become the components in my fully realized miniature landscape collages. These micro habitats are scaled up into acrylic paintings. The artistic techniques used both in creating my collage papers and in applying the paint not only reflect the geological forces of landscape accretion and corrosion, but also reenact them. I often use crushed minerals embedded into the paint and apply resists of ground water, wind, friction and heat to erode the painted surfaces.  In each work, I employ a spatial technique in painting called "equivocal space" which alters depth perspective through color, composition and media to keep your eye engaged and journeying around the image. It is a way I've found that conveys how we move through actual landscapes.

When I paint the American West - I’m not thinking of 2018 and my reality of it per say - but imagining it as my ancestors saw it in the 1800s. The group who fled the North of England  to settle in Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado and beyond. My family roots here go way back to the beginnings of settlement. I’m just a recent transplant. They must have seen the West as an untouched, unspoiled Utopia. Compared to early industrialized England - it would have seemed like a harsh, uncivilized, unforgiving paradise of possibility. Through my landscape paintings, I can create visions of an idealized wilderness - a land loved by the First Nations, and all Westward bound dreamers since and one that will no doubt return to sublime serenity long after we’re gone. Geology fascinates me to no end - she holds our stories in her rocks, her curves, her lines, her strength of perseverance.
