SARAH WINKLER

Artist / PAINTER

artist statement

I am a landscape painter and collage artist obsessed with what makes some aspects of nature more beautiful than others.  Why some natural habitats are worthy of protected status and others are deemed not. Most of the inspiration for my work comes from being able to access some of the most scenic places on Ear th in National Parks and UNESCO sites. The rest of the natural world is privately owned or off limits.  Many artists before me have focused on the wide open, romantic vision of the human alone in the epic landscape. But back then, there were wide open empty landscapes to admire.  I worry that we are losing touch with the quiet beauty of nature, ignoring its finite access and my aim as an artist is to show it off in magnified glory. I take creative liberty in my imaginative approach to landscape painting by abstracting compositions, intensifying color, reenacting geological textures and omitting evidence of human encroachment. My process involves experimenting with resists and minerals, fabricating collage imagery and painting with acrylics. All of which leads to a moment of seeming perfection, an encapsulated natural habitat, a utopian world that you're discovering for the first time.
