Artist / PAINTER

SARAH WINKLER

My paintings are the result of a distinctive artistic practice deeply influenced by dramatic landscapes, the geology of mountains and deserts and the perpetual allure of the American West.

I begin by making miniature landscapes in cut paper collage on panel using unique papers that I designed and printed. The papers are made using art techniques that create textures to simulate tectonic uplifting, folding, fluid dynamics and glacial rock patterns.

The paintings are created by scaling up the collage sketches. Applying layers of acrylic paint mixed with minerals such as marble powder, mica flake, crushed lava stone and iron oxide, then applying natural resists, such as salt, water and temperature to interact with the painted surface to distress it and mimic geological forms in the landscapes.

The imagery is often described as “dreamy” as they evoke sensations of fantasy or partial reality. I intended the places I paint to be at once familiar, but to carry an air of play and curiosity as if your discovering a place for the first time.

ABOUT

Although landscape painting has been around for thousands of years, Sarah Winkler's approach makes it seem decidedly modern. Her influences stretch from British Romanticism to American Luminism to 2oth Century Modernism. Her abstracted compositions are aesthetically influenced by Scandinavian design principles based on reductive forms, using nature's color palette, and bringing aspects of the outdoor surroundings - indoors. For Sarah, living at a 9k summit in the Colorado Rockies surrounded by snow capped peaks, conifer and aspen forests, this high altitude world is the source of inspiration for her "mountain modern" landscape works.
