Artist / PAINTER

Sarah Winkler is a British-American landscape painter who was born in Manchester, England but has lived abroad most of her life in Africa, Borneo and America. She has lived out West in California and Colorado for over two decades and most of her painting inspiration comes from the landscape geology of this region. She lives and works at the summit of a 9k peak in the Colorado Rockies 35 miles from downtown Denver.  She shares her life with husband, Jason and Pugsley, the pug. They live in a matte black mountain home with a detached studio building on a property with 360 degree views of mountains and conifer forests.

Winkler studied Studio Art and Earth Science at William Patterson University. She has exhibited her artwork nationally in exhibitions and art fairs with K Contemporary, Space Gallery, RH Contemporary Art, Helikon Gallery, Gallery MAR, Fouladi Projects Gallery and Gallerie Citi. Her work has been placed internationally in private and corporate art collections including Chevron, Marriott, Hyatt, Ritz Carlton, Montage, Deer Valley Resort, Hilton West Palm Beach, Viceroy, Mountain Shadows and The Cosmopolitan Hotel.  Her work has been honored with features in various publications including Scientific American Magazine, New American Paintings, Dwell, Fresh Paint and Alpine Modern Magazine. She is represented by K Contemporary Gallery in Denver and Gallery MAR in Park City. She is currently preparing for a solo show at K Contemporary opening in July 2018.

Artist Statement

When I look at a spectacular landscape, I see a moment caught in time. A layer of rock and fauna resting between climatic and geological events. Their surfaces scarred by glaciers, the ridge lines formed by tectonic uplifts and the desert basins molded into ribbons of compressed sand from the weight and currents of a now evaporated ocean. I see a complex history of the environment adjusting and adapting to change and stress since the Earth's inception.  Some of the most impressive natural spaces boast incredible geology.  The colors, shapes, textures and luminosity of landscapes inspire me to travel and experience them first hand before reenacting their story using paint, erosion techniques and crushed minerals.

I search for the image through the materials and the process of creating. Seeing how textures and colors, form and light emerge from the blank space. Working from the memory of favorite mountains, mesas and ridge lines, I conjure up layered landscapes and form new geologies.

I work in a deconstructed format, extracting features of the landscape and puzzling them back together again in a new geological arrangement. Using  acrylic paint, minerals and resists in an array of colors, I create a layered history of textures that mimic the basic patterns found in landscape.  My process begins by constructing miniature landscapes in cut paper collage which I then translate those compositions into large scale acrylic paintings.  In my approach to landscape painting, I will abstract compositions, intensify color relationships, reenact geological textures and alter spatial perception. because I'm looking to explore the gestural actions that lead to new expressions of place.  A moment of seeming perfection, an encapsulated natural habitat that you're discovering for the first time.
