Painter Sarah Winkler Immortalizes Totality From The Great American Eclipse

Colorado-based landscape painter Sarah Winkler captures forever the fleeting two minutes of the Great American Eclipse in August 2017 from her vantage point along the path of Totality in her newest series, Eclipse Light. Featuring an original palette of color mixes, Sarah illustrates how the spectacular change in light momentarily transformed the Wyoming landscape.

While standing directly in the path of the mesmerizing Totality in the Medicine Bow National Forest in southeastern Wyoming, Sarah’s eyes were drawn from the ethereal corona and the glistening Baily’s Beads to the once-in-a-lifetime transformation of the majestic landscape. “The vivid colors were momentarily replaced by warm and desaturated tones of a mystical gray,” she recalls, “that was not quite moonlight, not quite darkness.”

To reproduce the stunning visual experience, Sarah developed a new array of low-intensity monochromatic colors that she refers to as the Totality Palette. Utilizing her unique style of distressing the applied paints with erosive elements and sanding tools to mimic the impact of natural forces, she’s created captivating compositions that highlight the dramatic contrasting interplays of light and shadow uniquely orchestrated by the total solar eclipse.

“Creating the new Totality Palette was essential for portraying the breathtaking change of light,” Sarah says. “It was like nothing I’d ever experienced before.”

ABOUT SARAH WINKLER

Sarah Winkler’s artistic techniques not only reflect the geological forces of erosion and formation, but also reenact them. She applies paints mixed with natural materials such as marble and iron oxide, and then distresses them with salt and sanding tools to mimic the impact of wind and temperature. The result is a naturalistic, abstracted landscape with an air of play and curiosity about the natural world. Visit Sarah online at www.sarahwinkler.com.
