Before I begin a painting, I spend time choosing a color palette. I still grab a color wheel and study the relationships. No matter whether itsa split complement or analogous color scheme, its the values (lights and darks) of each of the colors within the relationship that I tweak to get a family of hues and shades that live well together. Blending, and adjusting for saturated color where I will want punch and subtle greyed color for calmness.
I snap a pic of each of these palettes after I mix them for future reference and because it looks edible and yummy. What I find interesting are the shifts in my color palettes over time and how one season influences the next color family. I've been posting these pics on my Instagram feed (@sarahwinklerart) lately for fun.
