I found myself outside of Leadville last weekend supporting my husband in a Winter night fat bike race. So I wasn't really that photographically prepared equipment-wise when I saw this most incredible sight looming over my right shoulder.
I jumped in the car and zoomed down to the valley floor to stand a squarely In front of the massive and majestic Collegiate Peaks rising up and over 14,000 ft high. The sun had long gone behind the range and the ridge line was back lit in a surreal gradient glow. I quickly started to shoot what I could with my iPhone of all things and was thrilled it picked up Venus in the sky. I managed to get a few images that could work as reference material combined with my memory of the "event".
The cropped and mirrored IPHONE photographs gave me texture, light, color and composition ideas. In the studio, I designed and printed a collection of uniquely colored and textured papers and then created these three 12 X 12" collages below with them. I do the collage step to remove myself from the reality of the photographic image and back to that space of direct experience.
NEXT STEP - PAINTING
These collage sketches will have to wait patiently to be developed into my final large scale finished paintings. Stay tuned....
