Delving deeper into the monumental geological past that formed the Rocky Mountains and surrounding rain shadow deserts. This collection of large scale acrylic paintings with crushed minerals explores and reveals the essential nature of the Western landscape both above and below ground.
Working with a signature set of abstract textures based on geological erosion patterns, Winkler manipulates paint media to create soaring mountainous dreamscapes that lift upward and plunge downward from implied horizon lines. Based off the knowledge that the Earth is not a static place, that ancient landscapes arrived through a series of unexpected cataclysmic and climatic events, Winkler constructs alternate tectonic and metamorphic mountainscapes. Elements of experimentation, unpredictability, chance and discovery are common components in her approach to the work.
