I must title finished artwork. Poetry and painting speak the same language for me. Finding two or three words that boil down an image to its core essence is the beautiful challenge of titling. It's the most important final step of the art process: the bridge connecting the audience to the work. A title in relation to the image can be obvious, profound, indifferent, emotive, inspirational, esoteric or meaningful.
Looking at other art, I find heavily abstracted works or any piece where I'm having a difficult time grasping the content are better titled than not. Throw me a rope! Help me lean in and get excited about the work too. Often a complex puzzle is not something I have time to solve in a 10 minute gaze at an artists work. Looking to a wordy statement for a connection can still leave me dazed and confused, but a title is the lifeline that could have kept me looking and perhaps purchasing the work. Imagine books with no titles!
