This is one of my favorite local spots to see a river carving into a rock canyon on the North Fork of the South Platte river in Jefferson County, Colorado.
The Narrow Gauge trail hugs a tight canyon full of class II/III rapids and the roar of white water echoing of the steep rock facades gets your heart racing. The serene lake at the end of the trail creates some of the most gorgeous mirrored reflections in all seasons on a calm (non windy) day. My favorite time to shoot this canyon is on days like this when it is overcast and the sky is white-grey which focuses your eye on the landscape. The crisp evergreen water and conifers contrast richly with the burnt rusty oranges of the late Fall grasses and rock. With a blue sky, this would look drastically different.
