Decided to start with a black base today! I saw an aboriginal painter on Ann Snell's Instagram feed (@ann_snell_art) do a black under painting and I want to know what I'm missing. Black is ancestral. Black is spirit. Black is the Universe. All creatures are born from blackness into light. I like the metaphors of a black foundation .... So off I go into the abyss. Last painting for the fast approaching Space Gallery exhibition.
UPDATE: Ann's Response to my post 6/26/2016
Ann Snell Hey Ms Sarah Winkler. Why do Aboriginal Artists generally paint on a 'Black' canvas?
The answer is unclear...
Canvas art in the desert started in the 70's.
The Art Centers and Wholesale Art supplies prepare the canvases. The trend being black or brown. One reason they the canvases are dark is White is easy scuffed in the red earth. As the Artist's mostly work on the ground from all angles.
Another idea is the, ceremonial bodypaint is on dark skin. These designs are revisited on canvas.
There is an art center in Yuendumu that go out of there way to provide blue, orange, red canvases for their Artist's and I do think this changes and challenges an Artists Palette.
Great idea to Challenge yourself babe. Ann xx
UPDATE: July 1st, 2016.
The painting was finished in time for the exhibition and resulted in a luscious variety of rich and earthy red mixes over the deep black.
