I wanted to simulate the geological banding and granular texture of red rock sandstone in this painting, so I experimented and came up with a technique I call Evaporating Pigment Pool where pigment is applied and suspended in a pool of Rocky Mountain Spring water and left to evaporate over 2 days on the panel. The settling and drying of the remaining pigment mimics the same physical fluid dynamics as crushed mineral rock eroded by water.
