Sarah Winkler is a British born contemporary artist working in Colorado, USA. She studied Art and Earth Science at William Paterson University, New Jersey, and combines both subjects in her geological landscapes and environmental artworks. She is best known for her mountain and desert landscape interpretations of the American West. Works that respond to a utopian sense of landscape, a constructed sense of heightened beauty, a raw wilderness existing on its own terms within a natural cycle of forces that continue to shape it.
Geological research of specific areas assists in the visual and thematic choices that create each body of work. Winkler works experimentally with paint, pigment, additives, resists, brushes and unconventional tools to create textures and imagery that mimic the forces and patterns of nature that sculpt and change landscapes over time. Starting with small scale collage studies using the artist’s own unique papers. that are developed into hand drawn, large scale paintings. The cut and layered aesthetic in her work reinforces concepts that the Earth is not a static place. That ancient landscapes can be altered through gentle erosion or by sudden cataclysmic events such as volcanic eruptions, wildfire and changes to the climate. Abstract fields of color and luminous textures are contained in hard edged shapes to resemble and define the essential fabric of a landscape. She incorporates ground water, crushed rock, precious metals and minerals in her paintings to create moments of connection, exploration and discovery.
For SEDIMENTARY Winkler is responding to the greater Mount Rainier Wilderness watershed landscape. A place of dramatic seasonal color, monumental glacial mountains, tranquil islands, active volcanoes and waterways that support the forests and fauna of the Cascade Range mountain region. Depicting the landscape both above and below an imaginary horizon line, Winkler’s reflective works emphasizes the cyclical geological processes of nature and interconnectivity of life sustaining resources in mountainous environments.
