BEWARE! An Important Scam Warning.
If you have received an email (using a false gmail account) from a "Sarah Winkler" “sarahwinklerart” or "sarahwinklerstudio" offering to purchase or exhibit your art, this is a known imposter scam and has been reported to the authorities. The real Sarah Winkler is publicly warning you that she does not solicit art online, does not buy NFTs with crypto currency and does not deal via WhatsApp or gmail email accounts. The studio receives many emails about this matter from artists and while appreciates knowing about them and feels empathy for those being targeted, we simply cannot respond to all of them.
If you receive a suspected email solicitation, take action and report it to the FBI’s Cyber Crime division at https://www.ic3.gov. This will help prevent others less savvy from becoming victims of financial fraud.
RED FLAGS to spot Art related scams in the age of AI.
Scammer is using a Gmail account
Asking above market value to purchase your work
An Exhibition offer is for a digital or NFT exhibition only. No physical venue address.
Language of email is flowery, embellished, gushing about your work they wish to purchase or exhibit.
Person (supposed buyer, curator etc.) they are impersonating has no connection to you digitally or physically.
Scammer wants to handle transactions in digital currency or using a known digital app like PayPal and Venmo.
If still unsure, cross check with the person or business they are impersonating. They are using details about that person or business to gain your trust. Don’t be fooled by this tactic.
