COLORADO, USA

Manchester, UK - born artist Sarah Winkler has lived in various countries, from Malawi, Africa to Brunei, Borneo. She has lived by Big Sur, California and in the Rocky Mountain and Desert West for the past 25 years. Her experience living in and exploring stunning geological landscapes influences her artwork. Winkler's Colorado studio sits atop a 9,000ft peak, where she creates contemporary landscape and nature based works as large scale acrylic paintings. She uses crushed minerals and maintains a collage layered aesthetic in her paintings. Winkler is an accomplished artist with an international reputation. Winkler is honored to have been featured in national publications such as Luxe Magazine, Dwell, Alpine Modern, UK Times, New American Paintings, American Art Collector, and Mountain Living.

“Sarah Winkler’s Landscape paintings of the mountain west and high desert are multi-dimensional portraits of the land that go below the surface in search of the patterns that form nature’s soul. She has emerged as one of the most distinctive and authentic voices in landscape art today”

Marc Le Varn, Co-owner of Vail International Gallery.

METHOD

Just as the earth’s geological formations present a layered landscape, so, too, does my imagery. I mimic the processes of erosion and deposition in landscape formation by applying acrylic paints onto wood panels, then removing it by a variety of techniques to mimic the natural patterns and textures of rock, flora and fauna. I often incorporate crushed minerals that I collect from the landscape into the paintings to blend Earth’s ancestral pigments with the modern pigment and rekindle the ancient language between the environment and the creative depiction of it.  Through painting, I tap into the passion I have for the wilderness and the story behind why the landscape looks the way it does. Collecting rocks, hiking trails, rafting rivers, chasing solar eclipses, studying geological time and crushing minerals into pigment are some of the ways I connect the outdoors experience to the painting surface. Tuning in to the circadian rhythms of nature, our connection to it, and the positive well being that comes from experiencing it. Channelling all of those sensations into a piece of original art can truly bring oxygen into a room. Harnessing all the best that nature provides us indoors to draw from her magnificent well spring. My landscapes exist in the realm of the wondrous. A bridge between the real and the fantastic through combining abstraction and realism. A place that is familiar, yet the visual sensation is heightened through color, texture, story, and process.

“She can create a multi-faceted landscape. They’re beautiful, but they delve below the surface and show you things related to geologic time. So they’re not static in that sense. It’s not just the surface, but also the fossil record — having an ocean-bed fossil at the top of a high peak, say. This is the sort of thing that makes you think. People love her work for the beautiful aspects, but they love the work in a deeper level over time.”
