SARAH WINKLER
Studio | Colorado
Sarah Winkler is originally from England, and has lived Out West for over 25 years. Her paintings are a striking exploration of the American West, characterized by their bold colors and dynamic forms. Her large-scale works capture the vast landscapes of the Rocky Mountains and the arid beauty of the Southwest deserts, infusing them with a modern sensibility that blurs the lines between realism and abstraction.
Each piece reverberates with a deep appreciation for the geology and ecology of these regions. Rich textures and layered brushwork evoke the rugged terrain and intricate patterns found in nature, while vibrant color palettes reflect the dramatic shifts of light and the emotional resonance of the environment. She structures her paintings in distinctive layers to resemble geological strata and often embeds minerals such as mica, obsidian, marble, and sandstone to bridge the tangible and the abstract nature of both the physical landscape and the artistic interpretation of it. Using a mirror effect to show the hidden subsurface geology with the visible world above, creating a dialogue between what’s beneath and what’s experienced.
Winkler’s studio sits on their mountain property high up in Colorado’s front range near Denver. She is married to mountain bike athlete and Spruce Cycles owner, Jason Winkler who also custom builds and prepares all of her art panels.
