SARAH WINKLER

Studio | Colorado

Sarah Winkler was born in Manchester, England.  She lived abroad in Malawi, Africa and Brunei, Borneo as a child before emigrating to the United States due to her father’s career in aviation engineering.  Winkler studied Art, Creative Writing and Earth Science at school in the UK and at William Paterson University (NJ) and combines those passions in her approach to landscape painting.  She and her husband, Jason have lived in California and Colorado for over 25 years exploring the West’s diverse National Parks and Wilderness areas. The studio is located at the summit of a 9,000 ft peak in Colorado’s Front Range near Denver.

Her paintings are a striking exploration of the geological story of mountain and desert landscapes, characterized by their hard edge, bold color and dynamic forms. Rich textures and layered brushwork evoke the rugged terrain and intricate organic patterns, while vibrant color palettes reflect the dramatic shifts of light and the emotional resonance of the seasonal cycles. She structures her paintings in distinctive layers to resemble geological strata and often embeds minerals such as mica, obsidian and marble to bridge the tangible and the abstract nature of both the physical landscape and the artistic interpretation of it. Using a mirror effect to show the hidden subsurface geology with the visible world above, creating a dialogue between what’s beneath and what’s experienced.

When not painting the American and Canadian Western Landscapes, Winkler travels abroad to witness some of the Earth’s most precious and protected geological landscapes in Iceland, The Italian and Swiss Alps, Hawaiian Island Volcanos, Orkney Islands in Scotland and beyond. These trips often lead into small collections of work for her international collectors.

Sarah’s unique approach to painting the history of the landscape has led to creating bespoke ‘Flavor Profile’ art commissions for clients such as Maker’s Mark Whisky, Imagery Winery and Royal Caribbean onboard restaurants. These unique paintings depict the aspects of the landscape region as it relates to the raw ingredients for the beverage or cuisine.

For the artist, mountainous regions are the greatest spiritually uplifting and most challenging landscapes on Earth. Their uplifted geological formations expose millions of years of our planet’s historical climate and fossil record. They are a window to the past and continue to evolve and change before our eyes. There is nothing quite like the 360 degree view from the summit of a peak. You are literally flying high.
