Sarah Winkler, Artist
BRITISH - AMERICAN, B. 1973
Studio | Colorado
Sarah Winkler is a contemporary abstract landscape painter born in Manchester, UK, whose work draws inspiration from the diverse geological landscapes she has encountered throughout her life. Having lived in places ranging from the rugged terrains of Malawi, Africa, to the dramatic coastlines of Big Sur, California, and the majestic Rocky Mountains, Winkler now resides in Colorado, where her studio sits at an elevation of 9,000 feet. This high-altitude vantage point informs her signature mountainscapes, blending her formal education in Studio Art and Earth Science from William Paterson University with a deep appreciation for the natural world.
Winkler's artistic process fuses acrylic painting with crushed minerals and natural pigments to create textured, layered compositions that capture the majesty, mystery, and environmental narratives of landscapes. Her influences stem from global travels and geological explorations, resulting in works that evoke the dynamic forces shaping our planet.
Represented by galleries across the United States and Canada, Winkler's art has been showcased in prestigious exhibitions, including those at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery, Bakersfield Museum of Art, Art Aspen, and RH Modern Gallery in Denver. She has also participated in the U.S. Department of State's Art in Embassies program, with her pieces displayed at the U.S. Ambassador’s Residence in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, from 2019 to 2023. Her work resides in over 100 notable collections worldwide, including the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, Imagery Winery in California, Maker’s Mark Whiskey in Kentucky, Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah, Amazon HQ in Bellevue, Washington, Chevron in San Ramon, California, Royal Caribbean in Spain and Norway, and Hotel Oberland in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland.
Recognized by ARTSY as one of the top rising female painters, Winkler's paintings have been featured in various art and design National publications and in the documentary "Moment" by Making Art Films, which delves into her creative process and inspirations. Continuing to bridge art and earth science, she explores the intricate connections between human creativity and the natural environment.
Artist Statement:
When I look at the American Western landscape, I see a moment caught in time. A layer of rock and mineral resting between climatic and geological events. The surfaces scarred by glaciers, the ridge lines formed by tectonic uplifts and erosion. All evidence of a landscape that has experienced dramatic shifts in character over time. Geological research of specific areas assists in the visual and thematic choices that create each body of work. I work experimentally with found landscape materials and tools to find textures and imagery that mimic the forces and patterns of nature. Textures that tell the story of the ancient landscape as well as those changing today as a result of climatic changes. By painting organic marks and gestures in layered formations to resemble strata, I can convey that landscapes are not static and are constantly evolving and adapting to shifting environmental conditions.
