Art Commission in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Sarah Winkler exploring Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland for an art commission at the Hotel Oberland, entitled “Staubbach Falls, Lauterbrunnen Valley”

Travel continues to deepen my visual imagination. A recent commission brought me to Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland’s Bern Canton, a valley famed for the 72 waterfalls that cascade from the glaciers above into its alpine flower filled meadows. Immersed in thundering water from the Weiss River, waterfalls and summer showers, I absorbed the rhythms of this mountain landscape before translating that experience into paint.

The owners of The Hotel Oberland in Lauterbrunnen, invited me to stay at their hotel for a week and explore the stunning alpine landscape in Switzerland’s most scenic canton. Painted by many artists through the ages and its steep cliff walls and distinctive three levels of terrain from bucolic valley, to mid mountain to alpine tundra inspired writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien to conjure up The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings based on repeated stays.

Art and travel are inseparable for my work, each journey expanding a sense of how terrain shapes light, color, and atmosphere in different parts of the world. It was a special commission and one I shall never forget.
